Evelyn K. McCarthy slipped away peacefully on September 3, 2016 after living all of her ninety-eight years to the fullest. Evelyn was the beloved wife of the late, Daniel J. McCarthy and pre-deceased by her son, John D. McCarthy. Evelyn is survived by her son, Kevin J. McCarthy and his twin sister, Karen E. Lyons along with their spouses, JoAnne H. McCarthy and John F. Lyons, her favorite son-n-law. She is the cherished grandmother of Ryan J. McCarthy, a special education teacher, Kerry E. McCarthy, a social worker and Danielle "jelly bean" Lyons, a registered nurse – all filled her life with great joy and pride.
Evelyn was the President and Treasurer of the Flanders Senior Center for over twenty-five years. She was well-known for her phrases: "don't worry be happy", or "book a trip" or "let's party" and "on the road again". To the very end, she reminded us to have laughter in our lives and to always look for the good in every person and every situation.
"Mrs. M" worked as a food-service manager for the board of education in Brooklyn, New York for thirty years, only retiring at age 72 and they did not want her to retire. She was one of the first to start a school breakfast program at P.S. 249 with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Evelyn knew these children were hungry and "food was the fuel", the building block necessary for a successful education.
Evelyn highly valued education, and went back to college at the age of 60 receiving an Associate of Science degree from LaGuardia Community College after being on the Dean's List all four semesters.
Although she did not start traveling until after her retirement, Evelyn was quite proud of the fact she visited all fifty states. In addition, she went to: Spain, Italy, Russia, all the Scandinavian countries, Australia, Fiji, Tahiti and the Panama canal – so a world traveler well into her eighties!
A celebration of Evelyn's life will take place on Wednesday, September 7th at 10:30 in The Church of St. Rosalie, 94 East Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays. Interment will be in Saint John's Cemetery in Queens the following day. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Evelyn's name may be made to either: The Flanders Senior Center or the Dominican Sisters of Hampton Bays.
