John Francis Dolan, 96, of Hampton Bays, NY, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026, surrounded by his family.
He was born on July 8, 1929 in New York City to Martin and Annie (née Keegan), the eldest of twelve children. At the age of two, he and his family moved to their family farm in Leitrim, Ireland. In 1946, at the age of 17, he moved back to New York City, where he worked various jobs while earning his GED.
He was a New York City detective in the Bronx, NY for nearly 30 years, before retiring in 1986 from the 41st Precinct, Fort Apache. Upon his retirement, he was employed as a security officer at Long Island University Southampton for ten years.
On October 14, 1961, John married Mary Margaret Smith, known to all as Maureen, sharing nearly 65 joyous years together. They lived in the West Nyack/Nanuet area of Rockland County, NY. After retirement, he and his wife settled in Hampton Bays, NY.
Outside of work, John enjoyed running marathons, gardening, camping, skiing, the beach, spending time with his family and loved ones, his German Shepherds, and being a parishioner at the churches he belonged to. He will be remembered for his infectious storytelling, inherent generosity and kindness, and devotion to his wife and family.
He is survived by his wife, Maureen Dolan, daughter, Patricia Grande (née Dolan) and her husband Frank, grandchildren, Patricia Grande and her wife Katrina Urbanski, Maria Grande, and Francis Grande, and great-grandchildren, Dominic and Mila Grande. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa Dolan.
A wake will be held on Monday, June 22 from 2:00-6:00 PM at R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays, NY (94 E Montauk Hwy, Hampton Bays, NY 11946), and a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 23 at 10:30 AM at the Church of St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays, NY (31 E Montauk Hwy, Hampton Bays, NY 11946), with a burial to follow at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Cemetery in Southampton, NY (231 County Rd 39A, Southampton, NY 11968). All are welcome to attend.
