Obituary

Mary Rose Morison Carroll

August 18, 1930 - November 25, 2020

Mary Rose Morison "Sis" Carroll, 90, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2020, while in hospice care. Mary was a long-time resident of North Merrick, NY.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, Thomas, in March 2020, her son Thomas Jr. in 1973, and her brothers David L. and Francis J. Morison. Survived by daughter Mary Small and her sons Francis and Anthony Buatti, his wife Emily and their daughter Gabriella, daughter Anne Shapiro, her husband Robert and their daughters Emily, Juliana and Claire, daughter Patricia Olds, her husband David and their sons John and Peter, daughter Elizabeth McCawley, her husband Michael and their children Vincent and Fiona, son David, his wife Lauren and their children, Samantha and David, brothers Robert F. and George D. Morison, and sister-in-law Ann Morison, as well as many devoted nephews and nieces and her cousins, the Ryans.

Mary was a 1952 graduate of Queens College, where she majored in Home Economics. She and her future husband Thomas met as students at Queens College. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and godmother. Mary and Thomas' fourth child Thomas, Jr. was severely developmentally disabled. During the 1960's and early '70's, the Carroll family received generous assistance from the local community with little Tommy's intensive at-home physical therapy program. Mary supervised this demanding program and was always grateful for the kindness of the many volunteers who selflessly devoted their time and energy to Tommy's care. In 1967, Mary's oldest daughter nominated her for Merrick Life's "Mother of the Year" award. Mary won, and was pleased to be recognized for her efforts as a young mother.

Mary was a devout Catholic, and member of Sacred Heart Parish in Merrick for almost 60 years. Mary was a caring mother of six children, skillful cook and baker, lover of word games, flowers, and the beach. She was a welcoming hostess, an enthusiastic swimmer, and always loved a good laugh.

When Thomas died last March, Mary was heartbroken. The night she died was the anniversary of their first date, seventy years earlier.

There will be no wake or viewing.  Gifts in Mary's memory may be made to Sacred Heart Church Parish Outreach, or to your local St. Vincent De Paul Society.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 4, at 11:15 at Sacred Heart Church in Merrick, NY.

Interment will follow immediately, at Long Island National Cemetery (Pinelawn) in Farmingdale.
