Obituary

Michael A. Sylvester, age 89, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on May 23, 2026.

Michael was born on June 6, 1936, in Bronx, New York, to Thomas and Fanny (Amitrano) Sylvester. A talented athlete, Michael excelled in sports throughout high school and earned a basketball scholarship to college. He graduated from All Hallows High School in 1954 before attending Manhattan College, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. Michael went on to have a fulfilling and respected career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Later in life, he pursued a successful career as a real estate broker. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Michael was deeply committed to his communities. During the 1980s, he proudly served for many years as President of the Shinnecock Shores Association and later remained active on the board of his homeowners association in Florida.

Michael’s greatest joy was life near the water. He had a lifelong passion for boating and fishing and treasured the time he spent enjoying the waterfront with family and friends.

He is survived by his longtime significant other, Marie Tumminello, and her children, Mark (Anita) and Matthew, along with their children; his brother, Thomas J. Sylvester and late sister-in-law, Eileen; his nephew, Brian Sylvester (Suszanne); his niece, Denise Sylvester; his great-nephews; and many dear lifelong friends who will miss him greatly.

Michael will be remembered for his warmth, leadership, generosity, and the deep connections he shared with those around him. His presence and spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, May 30th from 10:30AM to 1:15PM at the funeral home.  There will be a Mass of Resurrection at 1:30PM on Saturday, May 30th from St. Rosalie's Church in Hampton Bays.  A burial in St. Raymond's Cemetery, Bronx, NY will take place on Monday June 1st at 10:15AM
